A total of 11,079 people took aspirin for at least 14 days. The average age of people taking the drug was 63.8, compared with 75.5 in people taking the drug alone.
In the Celebrex group, the researchers found that taking celecoxib daily had a smaller risk of heart attack, compared with taking naproxen.
The findings were based on an analysis of the medical records of 7,742 people taking an NSAID for osteoporosis who were randomized to take celecoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor.
The NSAID was chosen because it is one of the most prescribed drugs in the United States. It is used to treat heartburn, indigestion, and ulcers.
But NSAIDs were not included in the analysis, as there were no data on the long-term effects of the drugs on the health of the kidneys.
"This study supports the conclusion that the safety profile of NSAIDs is similar to that of other NSAIDs," Hahn said. "A significant safety concern is the potential risk of ulceration."
Celecoxib was also not included in the study because it is a COX-2 inhibitor. But the study was designed to evaluate the risk of ulceration and stroke in patients taking celecoxib, which is also used in the treatment of arthritis.
It is not known whether Celebrex and naproxen could be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatic conditions, Hahn said. He said he did not know whether Celebrex and naproxen are similar in treating the conditions.
